Curriculum
LIU houses this degree in its Department of Digital Engineering. It is a standalone program in which every listed course carries the AI prefix, and it is separate from the MS in Computer Science offered on the Brooklyn campus.
Students complete 30 graduate credits consisting of:
- 6 credits of required courses
- 12 credits of core module courses, four chosen from a list of seven
- 6 credits of specialization courses, two chosen from a list of five
- 6 credits of electives or thesis
All courses are 3 credits, and students need a 3.0 GPA to graduate. The requirements described here follow the 2026–27 catalog. The table on the program web page is arranged differently and does not mark the two required courses.
Required Courses
- AI 681 – Machine Learning & Pattern Recognition
- AI 700 – Applicable Deep Learning
AI 681 is the prerequisite for most other courses in the program. AI 700 covers convolutional and recurrent neural networks and ends with a capstone project.
Core Module Courses
Students select four courses from:
- AI 602 – Programming in Python
- AI 632 – Algorithms and Data Structures in Python
- AI 680 – Artificial Intelligence: Present and Future
- AI 682 – Data Mining and Exploration
- AI 683 – Statistical Learning
- AI 686 – Automatic Speech Recognition
- AI 688 – Image and Vision Computing
Because Python programming and data structures are in this list, students can use core credits to build programming skills. Students who do so have fewer slots left for data mining, speech recognition, and computer vision.
Specialization Courses
Students select two courses from:
- AI 687 – AI and Machine Learning in Bioinformatics
- AI 689 – Computational Neuroscience, Cognition and Artificial Intelligence
- AI 701 – Intelligent Autonomous Robotics
- AI 790 – Special Topics in Artificial Intelligence I
- AI 791 – Special Topics in Artificial Intelligence II
The catalog lists AI 689 and AI 701 as offered on occasion, so students should check the schedule before planning around them. The program has no dedicated natural language processing course. The topic appears within AI 680 and AI 700.
Electives or Thesis
Students finish with one of two options:
- Non-thesis: 6 credits of graduate electives in Artificial Intelligence or Computer Science
- Thesis: AI 698 – Thesis I and AI 699 – Thesis II
The thesis is prepared under a faculty adviser and evaluated by the department’s graduate curriculum committee. Both options total 30 credits.
Cost and Tuition
LIU is a private university and charges graduate tuition by the credit, with the same rate for New York residents and nonresidents and for both campuses.
For the 2026–27 academic year, the university lists:
| Category | Amount |
|---|---|
| Graduate tuition, per credit | $1,435 |
| University Fee, fewer than 12 credits, per term | $529 |
| University Fee, 12 or more credits, per term | $1,058 |
At 30 credits, tuition comes to about $43,050 before fees. A student who takes four terms at fewer than 12 credits per term would pay about $2,116 in University Fees. The catalog also lists a $50 application fee and a $75 transfer and graduate orientation fee.
Rates can change each year, so students should confirm current costs with the university.

Admission Requirements
Applicants need a conferred bachelor’s degree, or its equivalent, from an accredited institution before the program starts.
LIU states that application requirements vary by program and are found in the graduate catalog. The catalog entry for the MS in Artificial Intelligence does not list a minimum admission GPA, a required undergraduate major, or prerequisite courses, so applicants should confirm expectations with the Office of Admissions.
Application Materials
Applicants submit:
- graduate application at liu.edu/apply
- non-refundable application fee
- official undergraduate and graduate transcripts from all colleges attended
LIU does not list the GRE among the requirements for this program. International applicants are also asked for two letters of recommendation, a resume or CV, and proof of English proficiency.
For English proficiency, LIU applies its lower direct-entry scores to the Artificial Intelligence MS: TOEFL iBT 75, IELTS 6.0, PTE 50, or Duolingo 100.
Application Deadlines
LIU does not publish a fixed application deadline for domestic applicants to this program.
For international applicants, the 2026–27 catalog lists these dates:
| Entry Term | Deadline |
|---|---|
| Fall (international applicants) | May 1 |
| Spring (international applicants) | November 1 |
The international admissions page describes admission as rolling and recommends applying 5 to 12 months before the start date. Admitted students confirm their place with a non-refundable tuition deposit, due May 1 or two weeks after acceptance, whichever is later.
Program Format
The MS in Artificial Intelligence is listed in the catalogs of both LIU Brooklyn and LIU Post in Brookville, with the same requirements on each campus.
LIU does not describe the degree as online or hybrid. The catalog lists each course as three hours of lecture and one hour of laboratory. Applicants should confirm with the university which courses run on each campus in a given term.
The Brooklyn catalog lists the expected program length as four terms. LIU counts graduate students taking at least 9 credits as full time, and all master’s requirements must be completed within five years of admission.
The program page describes a learning and design center, run in partnership with Dassault Systemes, where students can develop research projects and prototypes.
Who Is This Program Best For?
Long Island University’s MS in Artificial Intelligence is a good fit for students who want a 30-credit degree focused on AI coursework in Brooklyn or on Long Island.
It may be especially appealing to students interested in:
- machine learning and pattern recognition
- deep learning
- image and vision computing and speech recognition
- data mining and statistical learning
- AI applied to bioinformatics, neuroscience, or robotics
- a thesis option within a 30-credit degree
LIU charges private university tuition and publishes little program-specific admissions detail, and it does not list an online option for this degree. The curriculum has no dedicated natural language processing course, and some specialization courses are offered only on occasion. Students who want online study, a broader computer science core, or public university pricing may want to compare other New York schools.
