Curriculum

SUNY New Paltz does not offer a master’s degree titled machine learning, artificial intelligence, or data science. The MS in Business Analytics, which launched in fall 2024, is the university’s only master’s degree in which machine learning courses are required of every student.

Students complete 30 to 36 graduate credits consisting of:

  • 0 to 6 credits of foundation courses
  • 21 credits of core courses
  • 9 credits in one concentration

Students must keep a 3.0 cumulative GPA, and no more than two grades below B- count toward the degree.

Foundation Courses

  • BUS 509 – Statistics Analysis & Decision Theory
  • BUS 601 – Python Programming for Analytics

Students who earned a B or better in statistics and Python, or equivalent courses, may have the foundation courses waived. Both courses are offered in the summer and online.

Core Courses

  • BUS 611 – Advanced Statistics for Business Analytics
  • BUS 612 – Data Wrangling and Visualization
  • BUS 615 – Data Warehousing and Big Data
  • BUS 621 – Text Analytics
  • BUS 631 – Machine Learning
  • BUS 632 – Data Mining
  • BUS 638 – Deep Learning

The catalog describes BUS 638 as covering basic neural networks, convolutional and recurrent network structures, deep unsupervised and reinforcement learning, and applications such as speech recognition and computer vision. BUS 615 covers data warehouse design, Hadoop and Spark, and NoSQL databases.

BUS 611 and BUS 612 are prerequisites for the Machine Learning, Data Mining, and Deep Learning courses.

Business Intelligence Concentration

Students choose three courses from:

  • BUS 618 – Spreadsheet for Business Analytics
  • BUS 622 – Sport Analytics
  • BUS 626 – Advanced Healthcare Analytics
  • BUS 641 – Social Network and Web Analytics
  • BUS 642 – Time Series and Forecasting
  • BUS 643 – Customer Analytics
  • BUS 648 – Natural Language Processing

Natural Language Processing is an elective in this concentration only. It requires BUS 621 and BUS 638 first.

Accounting Concentration

  • BUS 581 – Accounting Information Systems
  • BUS 616 – Forensic Accounting
  • BUS 617 – Accounting Data Analytics

Healthcare Concentration

Students take BUS 626 – Advanced Healthcare Analytics and choose two courses from:

  • BUS 544 – Health Care Finance
  • BUS 561 – Healthcare Policy
  • BUS 562 – Healthcare Management and Leadership

The catalog does not list a thesis, capstone project, or comprehensive examination for this degree.

Cost and Tuition

SUNY New Paltz is a public university and charges different graduate tuition rates for New York residents and nonresidents. Nonresidents who study fully online in this program pay a reduced online rate.

The Student Accounts office lists these rates for matriculated graduate students, which match the university’s 2026–27 cost of attendance figures:

CategoryTuition per CreditFull-Time Tuition per Semester (12 or more credits)Fees per Semester
New York resident$471$5,655.00$750.75
Out of state$963$11,550.00$750.75
Online, out of state$565$6,785.00$354.25

At the per-credit rate, 30 credits of tuition comes to about $14,130 for a New York resident, $28,890 for an out-of-state student, and $16,950 for an out-of-state student studying fully online, before fees. Students who need both foundation courses take 36 credits.

Full-time fees cover the college, student activity, health center, athletic, and technology fees. The online out-of-state schedule does not include the health center or athletic fee. Part-time students pay fees by the credit.

The online out-of-state rate applies only to nonresidents who take all of their courses online. Nonresidents who plan to attend on campus pay the regular out-of-state rate. The MBA is billed on a separate, higher schedule. Rates can change, so students should confirm current costs with Student Accounts.

Admission Requirements

Applicants need a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. No prior business education is required.

The program requires a minimum 3.0 cumulative undergraduate GPA on a 4.0 scale.

Applicants below a 3.0 may apply for conditional admission. They should be prepared to provide GMAT or GRE scores if requested, and the catalog names a 450 GMAT or a 300 GRE as a satisfactory score.

Entering students are expected to have completed:

  • statistics
  • Python programming

Students without these courses take BUS 509 and BUS 601 before starting the core.

Application Materials

Applicants submit:

  • online graduate application and $60 application fee
  • official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate coursework
  • three current letters of recommendation
  • statement of objectives
  • proof of English proficiency when required

The English proficiency minimum is a TOEFL iBT score of 74 or an IELTS score of 6.0. Applicants who meet the academic requirements without that score may be admitted conditionally through the university’s Pathway Program.

Application Deadlines

Entry TermDeadline
SummerMay 1

The catalog lists only a summer deadline for this program. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until the program is full, but an application must at least be started by the deadline to be considered. Applicants planning a fall start should confirm dates with the Office of Graduate Admissions.

Program Format

All courses are taught in a HyFlex format, with instruction delivered to a seated class in New Paltz and to online students at the same time. Students can move between attending in person and online.

The catalog lists the program as full time at 15 credits per term. On that schedule the 30-credit program takes nine months, or up to one year for students who need the summer foundation courses. All requirements must be completed within seven years.

New Paltz undergraduates can also enter through accelerated pathways that count six graduate credits toward both degrees.

Who Is This Program Best For?

SUNY New Paltz’s MS in Business Analytics is a strong option for students who want required machine learning coursework in a short, applied degree at public university tuition.

It may be especially appealing to students interested in:

  • machine learning, data mining, and deep learning applied to business problems
  • text analytics and natural language processing
  • data warehousing, Spark, and NoSQL databases
  • analytics in accounting, healthcare, sports, or marketing
  • entering analytics from any undergraduate major, with statistics and Python foundation courses available
  • a nine-month program that can be attended in person or online

This is a business school degree, not a computer science degree. The machine learning courses are taught with a focus on business decision making, nine credits go to a business concentration, and there is no thesis or capstone. The catalog lists full-time study only. Students who want a degree in artificial intelligence or data science, more theory and algorithms, or a research thesis may want to compare other New York schools or the university’s MS in Computer Science, where Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence are optional courses.

Students can also compare SUNY New Paltz with other master’s programs in machine learning, artificial intelligence, and related fields offered in New York.
