Curriculum
SUNY Oswego does not offer a master’s degree in machine learning, artificial intelligence, data science, or computer science. The Biomedical and Health Informatics degree is the university’s only master’s program with a required machine learning course. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).
Students complete 33 to 36 graduate credits consisting of:
- 0 to 3 credits of foundation coursework
- 18 credits of core courses
- 15 credits in one track, including a 6-credit project, internship, or thesis
Foundation Course
- BHI 552 – Biomedical and Health Terminology
Only students without a background in biology or health studies take this course. The program director advises each student individually on foundation knowledge, and foundation requirements must be completed to continue beyond the first year.
Core Courses
- BHI 501 – Introduction to Health Information Systems
- BHI 502 – Health Informatics Methods
- BHI 503 – eHealth Systems
- BHI 504 – Systems Design, Integration, Safety & Security
- BHI 507 – Theoretical Foundations of Health Informatics
- BHI 508 – Database Applications
The core covers health information systems, electronic health records, databases, web systems, and systems design. None of the six core courses is a machine learning course.
Artificial Intelligence in Biomedicine Track
- BHI 505 – Digital Health
- BHI 506 – Machine Learning and AI
- One 3-credit elective chosen under advisement
- 6 credits of project, internship, or thesis
BHI 506 presents AI and machine learning approaches for descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive use of data, applied to decision support in diagnosis, treatment planning, and monitoring. BHI 505 covers mobile health, sensor-based systems, sensor data analysis and mining, and telehealth.
Health Data Science Track
- BHI 509 – Data Science
- BHI 510 – Geospatial, Temporal & Network Data Science
- One 3-credit elective chosen under advisement
- 6 credits of project, internship, or thesis
BHI 510 covers spatial statistics, time series prediction, survival analysis, clustering, machine learning methods, and text classification. The catalog notes that it emphasizes concepts, methods, and applications rather than theory.
Health Informatics Professional Track
- MBA 517 – Organization and Management: A Global Perspective
- BHI 506 – Machine Learning and AI
- One 3-credit elective chosen under advisement
- 6 credits of project, internship, or thesis
The 2026–27 graduate catalog also lists a Bioinformatics track built on BHI 557 – Bioinformatics and BHI 558 – Next Generation Sequencing Bioinformatics. The program pages describe only the three tracks above.
Project, Internship, or Thesis
- BHI 699 – Project in BHI
- BHI 698 – Graduate Internship in BHI
- BHI 700 – Thesis in BHI
Students choose one option under advisement. Each requires BHI 504 and adviser permission. Students also complete biomedical human subjects research training during their coursework.
The university does not publish a list of approved electives, and the catalog has no courses titled deep learning, computer vision, or natural language processing in this program.
Cost and Tuition
SUNY Oswego is a public university. Graduate tuition is charged per credit for 1 to 11 credits and as a flat semester rate for 12 or more credits.
For the 2026–27 academic year, the university lists these graduate rates:
| Category | Per Credit (1 to 11 credits) | Per Semester (12 or more credits) |
|---|---|---|
| New York State resident | $471 | $5,655 |
| Out-of-state and international | $1,011 | $12,130 |
| Online out-of-state* | $565 | $6,785 |
*The online out-of-state rate is for eligible nonresidents enrolled in a registered online program.
At the per-credit rate, 33 to 36 credits come to about $15,543 to $16,956 in tuition for a New York resident and about $18,645 to $20,340 at the online out-of-state rate, before fees.
Mandatory graduate fees are $52.54 per credit for 1 to 11 credits or $635 per semester for 12 or more credits. International students may also be charged $1,080 per semester for health insurance. Rates can change each year, so students should confirm current costs with the university.

Admission Requirements
Applicants need a bachelor’s degree or a biomedical professional degree from an accredited institution.
The program asks for a 3.0 GPA over the last two years of study.
Prior knowledge of statistics and computer applications is required. Applicants without it are still considered for admission and may be required to take prerequisite courses. A computer science degree is not required.
Application Materials
Applicants submit:
- online graduate application and $65 application fee
- official transcripts
- statement of purpose of 500 words or less
- resume or CV
- two letters of recommendation
- proof of English proficiency when required
The GRE is not required. Applicants may submit scores if they would strengthen the application. International applicants need a transcript evaluation from WES, IEE, or TEC, and a TOEFL score of 79, an IELTS score of 6.5, or a Duolingo score of 110.
Application Deadlines
SUNY Oswego uses rolling admission for this program and does not publish fixed application deadlines. Students can start in the fall, spring, or summer.
International applicants should confirm timing with Graduate Admissions, because the pages reviewed do not list separate international dates.
Program Format
The degree can be completed in the classroom at the Syracuse Campus or entirely online. Both routes follow the same catalog requirements.
The university estimates two years to finish. Its accreditation page reports an average time to degree of 19.5 months for full-time students and 28.9 months for part-time students.
The program is STEM designated, which can allow eligible international graduates to apply for the STEM OPT extension. Each student works with the program director on an individual study plan.
Who Is This Program Best For?
SUNY Oswego’s MS in Biomedical and Health Informatics is a reasonable option for students who want to apply AI and data science to healthcare, at public university tuition and with the choice of Syracuse or online study.
It may be especially appealing to students interested in:
- AI and machine learning for clinical decision support
- health data science, including time series, spatial, and text data
- electronic health records, databases, and health information systems
- a CAHIIM-accredited health informatics degree
- entering from a clinical, health, or science background without a computer science degree
- a STEM-designated program with no GRE requirement and rolling admission
This is a health informatics degree first. Only one course is titled machine learning, the core is health information systems, and the program has no courses in deep learning, computer vision, or natural language processing. Students who want a degree built around machine learning or artificial intelligence, a mathematical treatment of the subject, or applications outside healthcare may want to compare other New York schools.
