Curriculum

St. John’s lists this curriculum as effective fall 2026. The degree is separate from the university’s MS in Computer Science, which has a computer science core and offers machine learning only as an elective.

Students complete 30 graduate credits consisting of:

  • 15 credits of core courses
  • 6 credits of analytical foundation electives
  • 6 credits of technical applied electives
  • 3 credits of capstone or thesis

Core Courses

  • CUS 720 – Software Design and Architecture for AI Systems
  • CUS 730 – Cloud Computing and MLOps
  • CUS 740 – Generative AI and Large-Language Models
  • CUS 752 – AI and Machine Learning Foundations
  • CUS 756 – Deep Learning Models in Machine Learning and Generative AI

All five core courses are required, so every student takes machine learning, deep learning, and generative AI.

Analytical Foundation Electives

Students select 6 credits from:

  • BUA 602 – Business Analytics
  • BUA 609 – Advanced Managerial Statistics
  • BUA 610 – Data Visualization Applications
  • BUA 633 – Predictive Analytics and Business Forecasting Models

Technical Applied Electives

Students select 6 credits from:

  • CUS 510 – Database Management Systems
  • CUS 620 – Intro Programming for Analytics
  • CUS 625 – Data Visualization Programming
  • CUS 680 – Big-Data Analytics
  • CUS 716 – Algorithms and Theory for Intelligent Systems
  • CUS 725 – Databases for AI and Data Engineering
  • CUS 754 – Computer Vision and Applications
  • CUS 758 – Responsible AI and GenAI Security
  • CUS 795 – Thesis I
  • CUS 900 – Internship
  • a cyber security (CYB) elective

Computer vision is an elective rather than a core course. The program’s own course list does not include a natural language processing or data mining course.

Capstone or Thesis

Students finish with one of the following:

  • CUS 790 – Master’s Capstone Project
  • CUS 796 – Thesis II

Thesis II requires CUS 795 – Thesis I as a prerequisite, so thesis students use one of their technical elective slots for it.

Cost and Tuition

St. John’s is a private university and charges graduate tuition by the credit, with the same rate for New York residents and nonresidents.

For the 2026–27 academic year, the university lists these graduate charges for the College of Professional Studies:

ChargeAmount
Tuition, per credit$1,705
University General Fee, per fall or spring semester$170
Technology Fee, per semester$255
Student Government Activity Fee, per semester$75

At 30 credits, tuition comes to about $51,150 before fees and scholarships. The three semester fees add $500 for each fall or spring semester enrolled. The graduate application fee is $70.

The college’s graduate brochure says admitted master’s students are automatically considered for merit scholarships of $3,000 to $9,000. Rates are effective from summer 2026 through spring 2027 and can change each year.

Admission Requirements

Applicants need a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution or the international equivalent. The program page does not require a specific undergraduate major.

Applicants are expected to have sufficient previous coursework in calculus and statistics or equivalent mathematics courses.

The program page does not state a minimum GPA. The college’s 2024–2026 graduate bulletin says master’s applicants are expected to show a 3.0 GPA.

Application Deadlines

St. John’s does not publish a fixed application deadline for this program. Most of its graduate programs use rolling admission, and the university recommends these dates for programs without a set deadline:

St. John’s states that the program is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET under its General Criteria.

Who Is This Program Best For?

St. John’s University’s MS in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science is a strong option for students who want a required AI and machine learning core with evening classes in New York City.

It may be especially appealing to students interested in:

  • machine learning and deep learning
  • generative AI and large language models
  • cloud computing and MLOps
  • business analytics and data visualization alongside AI
  • a choice of capstone project or thesis
  • admission without the GRE
