Curriculum

Wentworth’s program page describes the degree as a Master of Science in Computer Science with a concentration in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The 2026–27 catalog lists a single curriculum for all students, without separate tracks. The program was previously named Applied Computer Science.

Students complete 30 graduate credits consisting of:

  • 12 credits of core courses, four courses required of every student
  • six elective courses chosen from computer science, artificial intelligence, data science, mathematics, and cybersecurity

Core Courses

  • COMP 7010 – Advanced Algorithms
  • COMP 7431 – Advanced Software Engineering
  • COMP 6710 – Principles of Machine Learning
  • COMP 6999 – Technical Projects Development

Principles of Machine Learning covers optimization, gradient descent, regression, classification, matrix factorization, feature engineering, boosting, and regularization. Technical Projects Development ends with a written proposal and oral defense for a thesis or capstone project.

Machine Learning and AI Electives

  • COMP 5705 – Data Mining
  • COMP 5750 – Embedded Artificial Intelligence
  • COMP 6760 – Computer Vision
  • DATA 6300 – Advanced Topics in Large Language Models
  • DATA 6710 – Applied Deep Learning
  • MATH 5700 – Mathematics for Machine Learning
  • AAIN 5720 – Trustworthy Generative AI
  • AAIN 7001 – Foundations of Artificial Intelligence
  • AAIN 7410 – Agentic AI Systems
  • AAIN 7420 – Data Engineering for AI
  • AAIN 7422 – Explainable Artificial Intelligence
  • AAIN 7424 – Intelligent Systems
  • AAIN 7430 – Prompt Engineering

All of these are electives. A student who wants a machine learning degree needs to use most of the six elective slots on this list, because only one machine learning course is required.

Other Electives

  • COMP 5775 – Advanced Parallel Computing
  • COMP 6100 – Secure Software Development
  • COMP 7025 – Sports Analytics
  • COMP 7350 – Big Data Systems
  • COMP 7800 – Graduate Special Topics in Applied Computer Science
  • DATA 6000 – Applied Statistics for Research
  • DATA 6100 – Data Visualization
  • DATA 6150 – Data Science Foundations
  • DATA 6200 – Data Management
  • DATA 7800 – Graduate Special Topics
  • MATH 7800 – Graduate Special Topics in Applied Mathematics
  • CYBR 6420 – Reverse Engineering
  • CYBR 6520 – Malware Analysis
  • CYBR 6550 – Threat Intelligence
  • CYBR 6580 – Digital Forensics and Incident Response

The catalog’s elective list for this degree does not include a natural language processing course.

Thesis and Capstone

Two culminating courses appear in the elective list:

  • COMP 7600 – Thesis
  • DATA 6999 – Capstone

The thesis is original research supervised by a thesis advisor and requires a proposal approved by a thesis committee. The capstone is a data-driven project that ends with a presentation and a written report. Both build on the proposal written in COMP 6999. The catalog lists them as electives and does not state that one of them is required.

Cost and Tuition

Wentworth is a private institution and charges graduate tuition by the credit, with the same rate for Massachusetts residents and nonresidents. The rate depends on enrollment status.

For the 2026–27 academic year, Wentworth lists:

CategoryRate
Full time (9 or more credits), per credit$1,339
Part time (8 or fewer credits), per credit$1,100
Estimated total tuition, 30 credits at the full-time rate$40,170
Comprehensive fee, 9 to 15 credits$500 per semester

The $40,170 estimate is Wentworth’s own figure for this degree. At the part-time rate, 30 credits would come to about $33,000. Students enrolled below the full-time threshold are not charged the comprehensive fee.

Health insurance is $2,090 for 2026–27 and can be waived with comparable coverage. The application fee is $50 and the enrollment deposit is $250.

Full-time students are considered for graduate merit scholarships at admission, with no separate application. Part-time students are typically not eligible. Wentworth notes that direct costs rise by 3 to 5 percent in an average year.

Admission Requirements

Applicants need a bachelor’s degree. Wentworth does not publish a required undergraduate major or specific prerequisite courses for this program.

The recommended undergraduate GPA is 3.0. The admissions committee may ask for additional material from applicants below that level.

Application Materials

Applicants submit:

  • online graduate application and $50 application fee
  • official transcripts
  • statement of purpose
  • resume or CV
  • one letter of recommendation from a professional or academic reference
  • proof of English proficiency when required

Wentworth does not list the GRE among its graduate application requirements. International applicants also submit a course-by-course credential evaluation from a NACES member organization and proof of financial support. Accepted English tests include the TOEFL iBT (79 or higher), IELTS Academic (6.5 or higher), and the Duolingo English Test (105 or higher).

Application Deadlines

Entry TermDeadline
SpringDecember 1
Fall (priority)January 15
Fall (regular)July 1

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and most decisions arrive about two weeks after an application is complete. Admitted students cannot defer and must reapply for a later term. International applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible.

Program Format

Wentworth lists the MS in Computer Science as an on-campus program in Boston, open to full-time and part-time students.

Full-time students take 9 or more credits a semester, usually three or four classes, and can finish in three semesters. Part-time students take one or two classes a semester. The program admits students in fall and spring.

The degree is eligible for the STEM OPT extension for qualifying international students.

Wentworth undergraduates can reach the degree through the 4+1 Double Leopard option, which allows up to two graduate courses in the senior year and completion of the master’s in two semesters after the bachelor’s degree.

Who Is This Program Best For?

Wentworth’s MS in Computer Science is a strong option for students who want a short, on-campus computer science master’s in Boston with a required machine learning course and a wide choice of AI electives.

It may be especially appealing to students interested in:

  • machine learning alongside algorithms and software engineering
  • applied deep learning and computer vision
  • large language models, generative AI, and agentic AI systems
  • data mining and big data systems
  • a thesis or an applied capstone project
  • a three-semester, STEM-designated degree with fall and spring starts

The degree is a computer science master’s first. Only one machine learning course is required, the AI and machine learning focus is not a separate track in the catalog, and the elective list has no natural language processing course. Wentworth does not list an online option for this degree, and tuition is at private university rates. Students who want a degree built entirely around machine learning, online study, or public university pricing may want to compare other Massachusetts schools.

Students can also compare Wentworth Institute of Technology with other master’s programs in machine learning, artificial intelligence, and related fields offered in Massachusetts.
