Cost and Tuition
Illinois Tech is a private university and charges the same graduate tuition regardless of residency.
For the 2026–27 academic year, Student Accounting lists the following for main campus graduate students:
| Charge | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition | $1,925 per credit hour |
| Activity fee | $125 per semester full time, or $50 per course part time |
| Student service fee | $800 per semester full time, or $325 per semester part time |
At 30 credits, tuition comes to about $57,750 before fees. Full-time students are also billed for student health insurance unless they show equivalent coverage.

Admission Requirements
Applicants need a four-year bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0.
Applicants whose bachelor’s degree is outside computer science may be required to complete up to three preparatory courses with a grade of B or better. These credits do not count toward the 30:
- CS 201 – Accelerated Introduction to Computer Science
- CS 401 – Introduction to Advanced Studies I
- CS 402 – Introduction to Advanced Studies II
Applicants are also expected to have completed at least one calculus course.
Application Materials
Applicants submit:
- online graduate application and $100 application fee
- transcripts from all institutions attended
- professional statement
- resume
- letters of recommendation
- proof of English proficiency when required
Graduate Admission states that the GRE is optional for all master’s programs. The Department of Computer Science catalog still lists minimum GRE scores for this degree, along with two letters of recommendation, so applicants should confirm current expectations with the department.
Application Deadlines
| Entry Term | Deadline |
|---|---|
| Fall (priority) | January 31 |
| Fall (regular) | July 15 |
| Spring (priority) | October 1 |

International applicants living outside the United States have earlier regular deadlines of June 15 for fall and November 15 for spring. Applicants who meet the first priority deadline are automatically considered for departmental scholarships and assistantships.
Program Format
Illinois Tech lists the M.A.S. in Artificial Intelligence as available on campus and online. Campus courses meet at the university’s main campus in Chicago.
The degree is coursework only, and students can enroll full time or part time. The program is STEM designated.
Illinois Tech does not publish a set completion time for this degree, so applicants should ask the department how many courses are offered online each term.
Who Is This Program Best For?
Illinois Tech’s Master of Artificial Intelligence is a strong option for students with a computing background who want a focused AI degree with room to choose their own direction.
It may be especially appealing to students interested in:
- machine learning and deep learning
- computer vision and natural language processing
- reinforcement learning and probabilistic models
- applying AI in bioinformatics, neuroscience, robotics, or finance
- a campus or online option from a Chicago university
- a STEM-designated degree
Only two courses are fixed, so deep learning, computer vision, and natural language processing are choices rather than guarantees, and the degree has no thesis or capstone. Tuition is also higher than at public universities. Students who want a research thesis, a required applied project, or lower tuition may want to compare other Illinois schools.
