Curriculum

The Bayesian Machine Learning concentration combines a common data science core with specialized coursework in statistics and Bayesian methods.

Bayesian Machine Learning Courses

Students select three concentration courses from:

The concentration emphasizes Bayesian learning, statistical inference, computational methods, time-dependent data, causal modeling, and decision-making under uncertainty.

Capstone or Thesis

Students finish the program through one of two paths:

  • FSE 570 – Data Science Capstone: 3 credits
  • STP 599 – Thesis: 6 credits

The capstone provides an applied option, while the thesis is better suited to students interested in research or possible doctoral study.

Admission Requirements

Applicants should have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in computing, engineering, mathematics, statistics, operations research, information technology, or a related field from a regionally accredited institution.

Applicants need a minimum 3.0 GPA in the final 60 credit hours of their first bachelor’s degree or a minimum 3.0 GPA in an applicable master’s program.

ASU also expects applicants to demonstrate preparation in:

  • undergraduate statistics or probability
  • undergraduate linear algebra
  • MATLAB, Python, SQL, R, or another relevant programming language

Completion of undergraduate linear algebra is a firm requirement for the Bayesian Machine Learning concentration.

Applicants without a degree in a computing or closely related field may also need to show relevant experience or credentials such as the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, Google IT Support Certificate, or Google Data Analytics Certificate.
