Curriculum

Pittsburg State’s program is a technology management degree with an AI emphasis. Most of the required credits cover research methods, statistics, leadership, and project management, and the AI coursework is applied and conceptual. The catalog does not list a course titled Machine Learning or Deep Learning.

Students complete 30 graduate credits consisting of:

  • 18 credits of core requirements, including the 3-credit AI capstone project
  • 6 credits of AI emphasis courses
  • 6 credits of electives

Core Requirements

  • GRT 891 – Research Methods in Technology, or GRT 892 – Action Research Methods in Technology
  • GRT 887 – Statistical Applications and Data Analysis in Technology
  • GRT 804 – Organization Leadership for Technologists
  • ETECH 805 – Current Issues in Engineering Technology, or GRT 850 – Technology and Society
  • ETECH 809 – Engineering Project Management
  • GRT 830 – Artificial Intelligence Capstone Project

The statistics course is an applied introduction that covers data gathering, confidence intervals, correlation, and linear regression using statistical software.

Artificial Intelligence Emphasis Courses

  • GRT 828 – Artificial Intelligence Foundations
  • GRT 829 – Artificial Intelligence Ethics, Governance, and Policy

Artificial Intelligence Foundations is a survey course. It introduces generative and agentic AI, machine learning, natural language processing, and computer vision, and students apply existing AI models to real-world problems. The catalog describes its focus as conceptual understanding and the ability to assess AI applications. The ethics course covers AI regulation, corporate governance, and policy drafting.

Electives

Students select two courses. The options most relevant to machine learning are:

  • DSIS 750 – Data Mining
  • DSIS 813 – Predictive Analytics
  • DSIS 850 – Artificial Intelligence
  • DSIS 730 – Data Analytics: Business Intelligence
  • DSIS 811 – Data Visualization
  • DSIS 812 – Database Management
  • GRT 813 – Applied Programming and Automation with AI

Data Mining covers classification, clustering, association analysis, and anomaly detection. Artificial Intelligence covers the algorithms and programming logic behind AI techniques used in business information systems. The catalog lists an undergraduate artificial intelligence course as the prerequisite for Data Mining, so students should confirm prerequisites with an advisor.

The elective list also includes management and engineering technology courses such as ETECH 807 – Systems Engineering and Analysis, GRT 714 – Network Administration Concepts, and GRT 788 – Lean Manufacturing. With room for only two electives, a student can take at most two of the data mining, predictive analytics, and artificial intelligence courses.

Capstone Project

GRT 830 is required for students in the Artificial Intelligence emphasis. Students design, develop, and deploy a functional AI application that addresses a real-world problem, working alone or in a team, and deliver a project report and presentation. A pass or fail final presentation is required to complete the degree. The emphasis does not include a thesis.

Cost and Tuition

Pittsburg State is a public university. Graduate students who enroll full time in fall or spring pay a flat rate per semester that includes campus fees, and part-time and summer enrollment is billed by the credit hour.

The Gorilla Advantage rate extends in-state tuition to residents of more than 30 other states, including Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Nebraska, Colorado, and Texas. Students enrolled in a program the university designates as online pay the in-state rate wherever they live.

The College of Technology charges an additional fee of $30 per credit hour, capped at $350 per semester. Rates can change each year, so students should confirm current costs and which rate applies to them with the university.

Who Is This Program Best For?

Pittsburg State’s MS in Technology with the Artificial Intelligence emphasis is a practical option for technology professionals and managers who want to apply and oversee AI tools at work and who value low public tuition and online study.

It may be especially appealing to students interested in:

  • applying existing AI models to workplace problems
  • AI ethics, governance, and policy
  • technology leadership and project management
  • building and deploying an AI application as a capstone
  • adding data mining or predictive analytics as electives
  • in-state tuition rates that extend to many other states and to online programs

This is a technology management degree, and 18 of its 30 credits are management, research, and statistics courses. The required AI coursework is introductory, data mining and artificial intelligence are electives with room for only two, and the curriculum has no dedicated machine learning or deep learning course, no algorithms or programming core, and no thesis. Students who want a computer science or data science master’s with model building and machine learning engineering may want to compare other Kansas schools.

Students can also compare Pittsburg State University with other master’s programs in machine learning, artificial intelligence, and related fields offered in Kansas.
